Description

Mdina Glass Valletta is a retail outlet for one of Malta’s best-known handmade glass producers. Mdina Glass was founded in 1968 and was the first company in Malta established specifically to produce handmade glassware.

Handmade Maltese Glass

Mdina Glass combines traditional glassblowing with techniques developed through the studio-glass movement. Over time, the company expanded beyond small decorative pieces into a broad home décor, tableware, lighting and gift range.

Products Available from Mdina Glass

The current Mdina Glass catalogue includes vases, decorative and serving bowls, tumblers, jugs, carafes, oil and vinegar bottles, candleholders, lanterns, lighting, perfume bottles, sculptures, paperweights, wine stoppers, key rings, bookends and bathroom accessories.

The company also produces fused-glass items such as plates, dishes, pictures, Maltese scenes, picture frames, clocks, coasters, house numbers, family crests and decorative representations of the traditional Maltese fishing boat.

Jewellery and Gift Items

Mdina Glass also produces jewellery and seasonal decorative pieces. Its range includes Christmas decorations, personalised baubles, hearts, flowers and other small gift items. Because the products are handmade, individual pieces can vary slightly in colour, size and finish.

Mdina Glass Collections

Named ranges in the current catalogue include Lifestyle, Waves, Africa, Agape, Caspia, Germeno, Marble, Rough Seas, Seascape, Vanilla Sky, Bubble, Octopus, Textured, Riviera, Spike and Nero.

History of Mdina Glass

The company’s furnaces were first fired in 1968. British founders Eric Dobson and Michael Harris established the operation in Malta, with Joseph Said later becoming the first Maltese production manager and ultimately taking ownership in 1985. The Said family subsequently developed the business further into lighting, home décor and contemporary decorative glass.
